Le Mans rillettes, Loué poultry, Petits Sablés (shortbread), Jasnières wine, dairy products ... It's good to dine in Sarthe, and lovers of good food and fine wine won't tell you otherwise!

To eat well, go to the foot of Saint Julien's Cathedral and its elegant flying buttresses. Traders are busy from dawn on Sunday while the people of Sarthe linger on the terrace over a small coffee. This is the Jacobins Market, the biggest of the week, where you meet Sarthe's market gardeners, horticultural experts and goods coming in on little Breton boats. Tasty meats rub shoulders with plump farmyard poultry and chickens from Loué whose fame has long since passed beyond the boundaries of the department. They are sprinkled with Sarthe wines.

The Brotherhood of the Knights of Sarthe Rillettes, created in Mamers in 1968, organises the Mamers rillettes contest, undeniable proof of its commitment to the quality of this typical Sarthe product and its method of production. To taste homemade rillettes, go to any good Sarthe delicatessen.

Loué poultry

For centuries, Sarthe has been home to Le Mans capons and Loué farm poultry, all free-range. Governed by rigorous controls, "Loué" is the undisputed leader in farmyard poultry in France. A gourmet treat offered by chefs and some breeders in the department.

Sarthe is all about buying local. Farmers carrying "Bienvenue à la Ferme" (Welcome to the Farm) accreditation welcome you onto their farm where you can purchase dairy products, meat and fruit and vegetables...

The Brotherhood of the Little Shortbread, proud of its little shortbread ... from Sablé (which means "shortbread"!), protects this pastry tradition and helps maintain its reputation. Two shortbread biscuit makers continue the tradition in Sablé-sur-Sarthe:
